Siri hack now fully working on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch [video]
Siri has now been fully hacked onto an iPhone 4 and iPod touch and it now communicates with Apple’s servers to provide a 100% working solution. We told you a few weeks back that developer Steve Troughton-Smith was working on hacking Siri onto an iPhone 4 but had run into one or two hurdles. Well the main hurdle involved getting the hacked iPhone 4 to talk to Apple’s servers. That has now been overcome and it is now looking like a real possibility.
Talking to 9to5Mac, Steve Troughton-Smith revealed that the hack works across devices but requires files from an iPhone 4S that are not legally available to distribute. It also requires a validation token from a live jailbroken iPhone 4S. The whole hack involves around 20 steps to complete. Because of this, Steve Troughton-Smith doesn’t want to be involved in distributing the Siri port and has only done it to prove it can be done.
We don’t know at this point if others will take on the distribution and risk the wrath of Apple’s legal team, we will have to wait and see. In the mean time take a look at the two videos below. The first one shows the iPhone 4 running Siri side by side with an iPhone 4S and the second video shows Siri running on an iPod touch.

Steve Jobs
Walter Isaacson recounting a conversation with Steve Jobs about an Apple HDTV
“‘I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use,’ he told me. ‘It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud.’ No longer would users have to fiddle with complex remotes for DVD players and cable channels. ‘It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.’”

Reader Matt tells the story of how an Apple store manager broke a little rule so as not to dash the hopes of his 10-year-old daughter, and, in the process, made a little bit of retail magic happen.
Matt writes:
My daughter has been saving her birthday money and allowance for almost 9 months now so that she could afford an iPod touch with a camera in it.
As of this morning, she had saved the amount needed and headed to the Apple Store in Utah with my wife. They arrived at 10:30am, not realizing that the store would be closed from 11am to 2pm today. As they approached the store, two friendly Apple employees greeted them and said that they were sorry, but they were closed.
My wife pointed to my daughter who had a mason jar full of cash in her arms and explained why they were there and also pointed out that is was not quite 11am yet. They again said they were sorry, but could not let them in. My wife and daughter were sad, but understood and made their way to another store in the mall.
About three stores down, an Apple employee raced after them and explained that the manager was going to make an exception and let them in. When they were let in the store, they were the only customers in the place and every one of the employees stopped what they were doing as my daughter approached the register.
As she took all of the cash out of the mason jar, one employee stepped forward and said, "I don't mean to bother you, but I have to tell you that this made my day."
After the transaction had been made and my daughter and wife were on their way out, the store manager raised his voice and said to all of the employees, "Everyone, please give [redacted] a round of applause for saving her money and buying an iPod today."
My daughter was caught a little off guard by all of the attention and waved goodbye, then called me with the story.
Nice work Apple!
-MattNice job, Apple. By showing a little bit of human understanding and discretion to bend the rules, you probably just earned yourself a customer for life.

Disappointing iPhone 4S Breaks Single Day Sales Record
Apple today announced pre-orders of its iPhone 4S have topped one million in a single day, surpassing the previous single day pre-order record of 600,000 held by iPhone 4.
“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”
What a piece of junk. Clearly, consumers wanted more from this device.
Untethered iOS 5 jailbreak coming soon?
Potentially good news for those of you looking to update to iOS 5 this week but don’t want to lose your jailbreak. Stefan Esser, also known as i0n1c if you follow him on twitter, has revealed that he believes an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 may already be in the works.
As far as I know iOS 5 untether is covered by other people already. Guess who![]()
We don’t know at this stage if this will include the iPad 2, which has proven difficult to Jailbreak, or the soon to be released iPhone 4S which has the same Apple A5 processor. There is already a tethered jailbreak available for the iOS 5 Gold Master but that does not include the iPad 2. Also the problem with a tethered jailbreak is the inconvenience caused each time your device needs a reboot; it has to be connected to a computer or it will not restart.
Let’s hope that we won’t have to wait too long for an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5, it’s good to know that things seem to be “covered”.

Make the Apple Logo on the Back of Your iPhone 4 Glow with this Magical Mod

Apple’s MacBooks stand out in a crowd, thanks to their sleek design and bright Apple logo. Apple designed the logo on its laptops to glow, but the iPhone has lacked such a feature. Until now.
iPatch has teased a mod for the iPhone 4 that turns the device’s rear Apple logo into a glowing work of art. Whenever the iPhone’s screen comes on, the Apple logo lights up. Now that’s magical.(...)

Did Apple Try to Buy Dropbox For $800m to Help iCloud?

In the build-up to Apple announcing its MobileMe replacement, iCloud, the Cupertino firm apparently considered a move for the acquisition of syncing-in-the-cloud king Dropbox, according to reports.
Apple was so impressed with Dropbox, and its expected $100 million/year income, that they decided to offer $800 million in order to buy the company. The claim comes from Business Insider, and the report is quick to point out that the rumor is unconfirmed, but it is interesting to consider, nonetheless…(...)

Atari set to release its own joystick base for iPad
Hidden within the recent update to Atari’s Greatest Hits app is a rather tasty snippet of information. It points to an Atari branded joystick add-on for the iPad. The joystick and base is set to be called the Arcade-Duo and has a retro arcade type red balled joystick and four buttons.
Relive the fast-action excitement of all your arcade favorites, like Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command. Simply connect your iPad to Atari’s Greatest Hits app for Duo, and you’re ready to share the fun with family and friends anywhere! It appears to be a similar concept to the iCade although that does have a retro arcade cabinet too. Looking at the two designs this one may come in at a much more favorable price than the $99 iCade. The only availability information is that it is “coming soon”.
These type of accessories only work with certain games which makes them very limited. I would welcome a solution for an Apple supported system; that way all developers could get on-board and offer support for the majority of suitable games! Would you use a joystick system if more games were supported or do you think the on screen controls are good enough for gaming?

Runner uses Runkeeper to create an Apple logo shaped route through Tokyo
Joseph Tame decided to map out and run a half marathon as a message of thanks to Steve Jobs for his awesome achievements at Apple. What was special about the route he chose to run? Well it was in the shape of the Apple logo.
The route was recorded using the Runkeeper app and two iPhones. Joseph is no stranger to this type of running art. He has previously run routes which resemble the Twitter bird and an elephant.
Asked why he wanted to create an Apple logo, Tame said that having an iPhone had really changed his life in Tokyo. In Japan it is like a lifeline, even more so now that it can warn him when an earthquake is about to hit.

Just in case you can’t see the tweet from writer @tomkrazit, it says:
Apple took in more revenue from iPhone and iPad sales than all of Microsoft did during the last quarter.
And it’s true. Microsoft reported revenue for their last quarter of $17.37 billion. Apple reported revenue from sales of iPhone and iPad of $19.3 billion.
Amazing. Oh how times have changed eh?

Apple Store iPad Smart Sign jailbroken (video)
One of our readers took it upon himself to jailbreak one of the Apple Store iPad 2 Smart Signs (video above). If you are not familier, the Smart Sign is the iPad in front of each Apple product. As we revealed earlier this year, this sign explains and provides specifications for the product it sits beside.
Customers are not able to actually use this iPad for anything but the Smart Sign application, but with the right top-secret gesture anything is possible. That’s where reader Adrian came in. He figured out the secret gesture, went to the home screen, launched up Safari, and jailbroke the Smart Sign with the new JailbreakMe 3.0 tool.
Now that it has been done, no one else needs to do this, mmk?

Marathon 1 brings classic Mac gaming to the iPad
Marathon 1 is now available free in the App Store. Originally released for the Mac in 1994, Marathon is a classic first person shooter game by Bungie (who were later acquired by Microsoft and responsible for the Halo series). It started its iPad journey as a personal project by a developer called Daniel Blezek. Bungie got wind of the project and it has now been officially sanctioned. Marathon 1 is the first part of a trilogy.
STORY - defend the UESC Marathon colony ship against the aggressive Pfhor - play the role of the cyborg security officer - witness the rampancy of Durandal, the ship-board A.I. - uncover the surprising secrets of the Pfhor and the UESC Marathon
FEATURES
- 27 levels divided into six chapters
- missions include exploration, puzzles and extermination
- smooth game play experience
- “Carnage is as easy as point and shoot.” from the Marathon Manual
- 7 unique weapons
While it’s not really my cup of tea (I have never even heard of this game until today — don’t judge me!) — it does remind me a little of Doom or the first release of Quake, and classic Mac gamers and Halo fans will no doubt love it.

Apple Offers 7-Day Return Policy for Purchased Apps in Taiwan

Though the App Store is one of the best in the business, it certainly could stand a few changes. One of the refinements users have been calling for is the ability to take apps for a test spin.
The current policy calls for users to pay for applications before they get a chance to try them out. This isn’t a huge deal with $0.99 applications, but you could potentially pay $20 or $30 for a program that ends up not working out…
