Siri hack now fully working on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch [video]

Siri has now been fully hacked onto an iPhone 4 and iPod touch and it now communicates with Apple’s servers to provide a 100% working solution. We told you a few weeks back that developer Steve Troughton-Smith was working on hacking Siri onto an iPhone 4 but had run into one or two hurdles. Well the main hurdle involved getting the hacked iPhone 4 to talk to Apple’s servers. That has now been overcome and it is now looking like a real possibility.

Talking to 9to5Mac, Steve Troughton-Smith revealed that the hack works across devices but requires files from an iPhone 4S that are not legally available to distribute. It also requires a validation token from a live jailbroken iPhone 4S. The whole hack involves around 20 steps to complete. Because of this, Steve Troughton-Smith doesn’t want to be involved in distributing the Siri port and has only done it to prove it can be done.

We don’t know at this point if others will take on the distribution and risk the wrath of Apple’s legal team, we will have to wait and see. In the mean time take a look at the two videos below. The first one shows the iPhone 4 running Siri side by side with an iPhone 4S and the second video shows Siri running on an iPod touch.

Starbucks App Easily Hacked with Phone Cam?

If you are a user of the Starbucks app that lets you pay for your coffee using a barcode on your smartphone screen, you need to be aware of a very easy to take advantage of vulnerability in the app. It’s not a security issue where someone can hack into your account and pilfer your funds; it’s much easier to do than that, and much less high-tech.

The problem is that the barcodes the app uses for you to scan to pay never change. The barcode for your account is always the same. That means that a black hat standing near you when you have the app up can simply take a photo of your barcode and then use the photo to pay for their drinks.

An employee at system Innovators has demonstrated the process and says that he can take the photo and use your account to pay in about 20 seconds. I’d like to know what developer thought that a barcode that never changes was a smart thing to do.

Lighters Hacked into Motorcycles… Seriously

Sometimes a picture really isn’t worth a 1000 words. You will see what I mean after perusing the photos of this sweet hack below. A geek took some disposable lighters, took the things apart, and used the pieces to make tiny motorcycles.

It’s really cool, but the pics really don’t give you an idea of the entire scope of how to do this. If you are a Grade-A maker of weird things, maybe you can pull it off too. I don’t smoke, but I might buy a lighter just to try this. If the thing would spark as you roll it, I would have a nerdgasm.

Check out the build pics at Imgur to see the finished product. It’s cool and really looks like a motorcycle. My kids would go crazy for these and if you work out how to do it, let us know.

Kinect now offers a stealth mode, courtesy of optical camouflage hack (video)

You've seen so many Kinect hacks by now that you probably think you know them all -- but wait, have you seen one that makes you look like Predator when he's busy predatorizing the populace? Or one that lets you reenact your favorite Metal Gear Solid scenes with Snake's camo turned on? Yup, a Japanese coder by the name of Takayuki Fukatsu has exploited the versatile openFrameworks to give Kinect a mode where it tracks your movement and position, but turns the dull details of your visage into an almost perfectly transparent outline. Of course, you're not actually transparent, it looks to be just the system skinning an image of the background onto the contours of your body in real time, but man, it sure is cool to look at. You can do so for yourself with the video after the break.

iPhone 4 jailbreak enables FaceTime over 3G

If you were looking for an excuse to jailbreak your iPhone 4 using FaceTime over your carriers 3G network may just sway some of you to bite the bullet and go through the process. This can be done by installing a application located in Cydia called My3G [$3.99]. The app allows you to run any Wi-Fi only app over your carriers 3G network. While the FaceTime video calling quality suffers a bit compared to using Wi-Fi it still looks more than decent.

Update: If you’re curious, 9to5Mac says a 5 min FaceTime call used almost 15 MB of data. Something to keep in mind if you have a data cap.

To those of you who have not tried to jailbreak, is using FaceTime over 3G worth giving it a shot? Sound off in the comments below and be sure to check out the video after the break!

How-to: Install Flash on your jailbroken iPad (for real)

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/flashipadeng1.jpg
We just saw Flash 10.1 ported to the iPad demonstrated in video form by Comex, and now you can get in on the action too, as long as your iPad is jailbroken. It's called Frash, and while the plugin is still pretty early and doesn't do video playback yet, you can definitely play games and other animations right now, and we're told video support is forthcoming. Okay, so let's try this out, shall we? It's not point-and-click simple, but it's not that hard, either. Full instructions after the break.

high power nerf cannon mod fires balls up to 75 feet

Hacker Kipkay is up to his tricks again. In his latest instructional video clip, he shows us how to turn an ordinary NERF gun into a high-power portable cannon.

The modded NERF cannon uses the parts from a lighter, and a whiff of unscented deodorant as fuel to send projectiles sailing up to 75 feet through the air. Check out the video below for the basic instructions to make your own:

Just don’t go around shooting your neighbors in the kneecaps with one of these. I’m guessing it would leave a mark.

Cold Feet wedding bouquet responds to your nerves on the big day

When geeks get married, there's always room for some nerdy insanity. This new take on the bouquet comes to us via just that route -- a couple of geeks getting hitched decided to DIY themselves an LED bouquet which responds to changes in Galvanic skin response (GSR). So, when the LEDs are blue, the person holding the flowers is essentially calm, whereas white LEDs indicate excitement. Now, the bouquet cannot actually tell us if the excitement stems from being overjoyed or horrified to find out that your intended owns a fully realized and accurate Quark costume, but at least it'll give you some clues to start with. Regardless, this awesome contraption is also capable of recording heartbeat rates for both bride and groom and makes use of a 1GB SD card to store the data, and other features like infrared proximity sensors to record how many times a day the bride and groom are near each other. Check out the video of the bouquet after the break.

More Zombie Apocalypse Roadsign Hacking

hacked-roadsign.jpg This isn't the first time a programmable roadsign has been hacked, and it probably won't be the last. How do I know? I'm blogging from the keypad of one of the things right now! Now how do you spell "handsomest"? Is that right -- it looks funny.
At least two Florida Department of Transportation traffic signs - on West University Avenue and North Main Street - carried the warning: "ZOMBIE ATTACK!! EVACUATE." The sign on Main misspelled evacuate. But the signs were a hoax. Someone had hacked the message on the signs, either by telephone or working directly at the signs themselves, FDOT spokeswoman Gina Busscher said. "We've not seen any zombies on University Avenue," Busscher added, "so apparently it worked well. ... We've not had a problem like this before."
Oh damn -- I didn't know you could program these things by telephone! So what the hell am I doing standing out here in the middle of the median? I mean, besides flashing. That's no speed bump, lady! Don't fear: Zombies are not near [gainsville] Thanks to Kelly and Roy, who once hacked into the CIA mainframe a body up and threw it in the ocean.
