Siri hack now fully working on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch [video]

Siri has now been fully hacked onto an iPhone 4 and iPod touch and it now communicates with Apple’s servers to provide a 100% working solution. We told you a few weeks back that developer Steve Troughton-Smith was working on hacking Siri onto an iPhone 4 but had run into one or two hurdles. Well the main hurdle involved getting the hacked iPhone 4 to talk to Apple’s servers. That has now been overcome and it is now looking like a real possibility.

Talking to 9to5Mac, Steve Troughton-Smith revealed that the hack works across devices but requires files from an iPhone 4S that are not legally available to distribute. It also requires a validation token from a live jailbroken iPhone 4S. The whole hack involves around 20 steps to complete. Because of this, Steve Troughton-Smith doesn’t want to be involved in distributing the Siri port and has only done it to prove it can be done.

We don’t know at this point if others will take on the distribution and risk the wrath of Apple’s legal team, we will have to wait and see. In the mean time take a look at the two videos below. The first one shows the iPhone 4 running Siri side by side with an iPhone 4S and the second video shows Siri running on an iPod touch.

Untethered iOS 5 jailbreak coming soon?

Potentially good news for those of you looking to update to iOS 5 this week but don’t want to lose your jailbreak. Stefan Esser, also known as i0n1c if you follow him on twitter, has revealed that he believes an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 may already be in the works.

As far as I know iOS 5 untether is covered by other people already. Guess who :P

We don’t know at this stage if this will include the iPad 2, which has proven difficult to Jailbreak, or the soon to be released iPhone 4S which has the same Apple A5 processor. There is already a tethered jailbreak available for the iOS 5 Gold Master but that does not include the iPad 2. Also the problem with a tethered jailbreak is the inconvenience caused each time your device needs a reboot; it has to be connected to a computer or it will not restart.

Let’s hope that we won’t have to wait too long for an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5, it’s good to know that things seem to be “covered”.

iOS 5 jailbroken already

iOS 5 has been jailbroken within 24 hours of its debut in the iOS dev center. According to iOS hacker MuscleNerd, the exploit uses limera1n and is a tethered boot on the iPod touch fourth generation at this time. Cydia installs fine and seems to work without issue. This achievement is good news for devs who are rocking iOS 5 and those looking forward to the release version of iOS which should land this fall.

Cydia Search lets you search for jailbreak apps from your desktop

Cydia Search

Searching for the perfect Jailbreak app in Cydia on the iPhone can be a frustratingly slow experience. Cydia Search from Planet-iPhones.com eases your pain by allowing you to browse through the plethora of Cydia apps by category, repository or author, all from the comfort of a desktop browser. If you know what you're looking for, you can search by name, description, author, version number or one of the many other search filters, which should make short work of finding what you're looking for.

Once you've located a package you're interested in, you can check out who wrote it, the price, the current version, which repository it's stored on, as well as view the actual Cydia entry as it would appear on an iPhone. While this isn't the first implementation of a desktop Cydia interface -- ModMyi also provides a searchable front end for Cydia on the desktop -- Cydia Search provides a fast, slick experience that's well worth checking out.

It's great for those people sitting on the fence as to whether or not they want to jailbreak their iDevice since it allows them to view all the programs, add-ons, tweaks and themes before they take the plunge. Likewise, if you're looking for a new app or update, Cydia Search will allow you to find what you're looking for before you head to Cydia on your device to download it.

FYI: Redmond Pie is reporting that a jailbreak for the iPad 2 using Greenpois0n is imminent. Whee! Can’t wait.

iPad 2 jailbreak imminent?

iPad 2 jailbreak may be coming sooner than a lot of folks thought thanks to p0sixninja. In a recent tweet, he claims they are working on a jailbreak for the new iPad 2. As we all remember, with the release of the 4.3.1 jailbreak, the iPad 2 was left out of the fun, due to the difference in the bootrom.

p0sixninja appears to be confirming that the jailbreak does exist –

Since 4.3.1 is already exploited by the legendary @i0n1c, we’re working on finishing iPad2 jailbreak now.

How many of you out there have been eagerly awaiting a jailbreak for your iPad 2?

Toyota releases official Jailbreak Theme

Toyota have released a jailbreak theme in Cydia to advertise their new ‘Scion 2011′ car range. The theme is available for free in Cydia, by searching for Scion 2011 Theme. The theme itself includes wallpapers of the 4 different models of Scion (tC, iQ, xB and xD) which you can choose for your homescreen or lockscreen, it also includes custom buttons and a custom slider.

Will you be downloading this theme? How many other major companies will follow suit, and start to advertise to the jailbreak community? And will Apple have any response to this, given advertising dollars are now on the line?

VoiceActivator coming soon for your iPhone and iPod touch [Jailbreak]

Jailbreak developer chpwn is at it again and plans on releasing his new tweak VoiceActivator hopefully this week. VoiceActivator will allow you to take full control of your iPhone or iPod touch’s voice control feature. It will allow users to launch apps, open URLs, use Activator actions all within the standard voice control feature.

As of now all we can tell you is he plans on releasing it sometime this coming week through Cydia and we are yet to hear anything as far as pricing goes but it should be well worth the money if you are jailbroken and have a lot of apps and many things you do daily that causes you to tap through folders and menus. If you want to follow to the status of this tweak, follow @chpwn on Twitter.

We want to hear from all you jailbreakers on who is interested in this new tweak. Also do you think Apple should have already included this as part of iOS out of the box or do you think they will include it in the next generation of iOS? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below! Check out a video of this awesome new tweak after the break!

Limera1n teases all iOS device exploit, return of Geohot?

limetime

Looks like Geohot wants back with limera1n and back in on the Jailbreak scene. Just day after Chronic Dev Team and Comex announced the 10/10/10 release date of Greenpois0n, he has announced his own bootrom exploit, which he wants included in Greenpois0n, no doubt delaying it’s release… What will Chronic Dev Team do? According to the @chronicdevteam twitter account:

We are currently working the “situation” out. Don’t worry, you’ll still get the jailbreak in the end, nothing to be concerned about.

The story of Geohot is well known and his achievements in the iPhone hacking world are well documented…

  • He created the first hardware unlock
  • Founder of iPhone wiki
  • Published the first iPhone hardware unlock for bootloader 4.6
  • Found the iBoot Environment Variable Overflow exploit.
  • Released purplera1n
  • Released purplesn0w
  • Independently found the usbcontrolmsg(0×21, 2) exploit.
  • Released blackra1n
  • Released blacksn0w

Earlier this year, Geohot announced that he was quitting the Jailbreak scene due to constant pestering and criticism from fans and iPhone Jailbreakers whom he said robbed him of the joy of his work. His rumored Limera1n never released. So why now? Why waste an exploit (which will be patched by apple) on an already exploited and jailbroken firmware?

More as this develops.

iOS 4.1 Jailbreak on the way?

Several tweets this morning are indicating that a jailbreak for iOS 4.1 could come sooner rather than later.  Could there be any better news you ask? Why yes! Jailbreaker @pod2g as well as other sources are indicating that this “particular” exploit would require Apple to flash to a whole new bootrom in order to fix it.

What does this mean for jailbreakers?  It means they run less of a risk of accidental updates and what-not being so catastrophic.  Apple can’t fix this exploit by simply issuing a software update.  It would require a flashed version of the bootrom out of the factory.  We may eventually see new iPhone 4s shipped with newer bootroms but any older ones would remain jailbreakable, regardless of any software update Apple may issue.

So if you’re like me and lost your jailbreak for 4.1 (darn prox sensor!), you’ll soon be able to have jailbreak goodness back again.  How many of you still plan on jailbreaking and how many of you think iOS 4.x gave you what you needed?  For me, notification systems are still a valid reason to jailbreak.  What about you?

Update: A source  BGR was in contact with has now stated that a flashed bootrom would not be sufficient.  A whole new processor revision would be necessary. Jailbreakers rejoice!

iPhone 4 jailbreak enables FaceTime over 3G

If you were looking for an excuse to jailbreak your iPhone 4 using FaceTime over your carriers 3G network may just sway some of you to bite the bullet and go through the process. This can be done by installing a application located in Cydia called My3G [$3.99]. The app allows you to run any Wi-Fi only app over your carriers 3G network. While the FaceTime video calling quality suffers a bit compared to using Wi-Fi it still looks more than decent.

Update: If you’re curious, 9to5Mac says a 5 min FaceTime call used almost 15 MB of data. Something to keep in mind if you have a data cap.

To those of you who have not tried to jailbreak, is using FaceTime over 3G worth giving it a shot? Sound off in the comments below and be sure to check out the video after the break!

How-to: Install Flash on your jailbroken iPad (for real)

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/flashipadeng1.jpg
We just saw Flash 10.1 ported to the iPad demonstrated in video form by Comex, and now you can get in on the action too, as long as your iPad is jailbroken. It's called Frash, and while the plugin is still pretty early and doesn't do video playback yet, you can definitely play games and other animations right now, and we're told video support is forthcoming. Okay, so let's try this out, shall we? It's not point-and-click simple, but it's not that hard, either. Full instructions after the break.

iPad Wishlist: Separate user accounts

We have a huge iPad problem in my household, and it looks like we are not alone. The problem is, we only have one. Just one iPad and a handful of rapacious gadget-loving geeks. While the iPad offers the same physical hardware for each user, we would all benefit from some system of user accounts, allowing us to segregate our own personal files from each other, just like we do on our desktop systems.

As our own Victor Agreda put it, "Separate user accounts was probably the first thing I thought of when I brought the iPad home." He, like other users, was hoping to make accounts to limit access to e-mail identities, certain applications, and private files.

Read on for more on why this would be a great idea... and why we may not see it anytime soon.

Apple Banning iPhone Hackers (NOT Jailbreakers) from iTunes App Store?

app-store-ban

It would appear that Apple has taken a more agressive approach to certain iPhone hackers by banning their Apple IDs from the iTunes App Store.

iPhone developer/hacker, Sherif Hashim, first received a message on his iPhone after attempting to log into iTunes saying:

“This Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons.”

Now one would think this may be just a single incident but no, fellow hacker iH8sn0w responded saying he too was hit with the Apple ban hammer. This is turning out to be very Microsoft with their Xbox Live bannings to stop hacked consoles from playing on their online service and it’s exactly what we predicted could very well happen.

Now, to be clear, Apple isn’t banning Jailbreakers — they’re banning people who actively work to find exploits in the iPhone software to create Jailbreaks for the rest of us.

This may be a sign of things to come, however. Will Apple open the gates to unleash hell onto hackers, or is this simply a case of a few isolated instances? You be the judge, lets hear your thoughts in the comments below!

RedSn0w 0.9 Beta for Mac and Windows is Released by iPhone Dev-Team

redsn0w-399x294

The iPhone Dev-Team is back, this time with the first beta of RedSn0w 0.9 for Mac and Windows. Version 0.9 will allow for jailbreaking, unlocking, and customizing of the iPhone OS 3.0/3.1.2 software. It is important to note that this beta supports every iPhone and iPod touch with the exception of the iPod touch G3. (That will be supported after the beta period is over.)

For quite some time now blackra1n has been the most-used tool to get your jailbreak on but the way this new version of redsn0w works, could that change? You see this software uses the original Pwnage bootrom exploit from iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod 1G. What this means is the only way for Apple to combat it is via a hardware change. However, for the iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G running 3.1.2, things are a little different as they still use the USB exploit that is said to be going away with the iPhone 4.0.

Due to some last minute forum software changes, the Dev Team isn’t promoting the release yet, but if you’d like to check it out for yourself, the Mac version can be downloaded here while you can grab the Windows version here. (We’ll update with a link to the Dev Team post when it goes live).
