SwiftKey Tablet for Honeycomb Has a Two-Keyboard Approach

Android smartphones have long benefited from the Swiftkey keyboard app. Now that same convenience will be coming to Honeycomb tablets, and it really looks promising. Unlike the iPad keyboard, which has more or less the same layout as an actual keyboard, the SwiftKey Tablet app splits the keyboard into two, so that you can use your thumbs to type.

As you can see there’s a numeric pad in the middle, as well as three slots at the top of the keyboard where you can select suggested words. Here’s a short preview of the app in action:

SwiftKey’s solution is simple yet effective, and actually lets you hold and type on a tablet at the same time. Let’s hope it finds its way into more tablets. Check out SwiftKey’s blog for more info.

Zaggmate iPad keyboard case joins the fray

zaggmate ipad keyboard case
Have an iPad but still feel the need to have a case and/or keyboard to go with it? While we have certainly seen similar iPad cases with keyboards and even some cases made out of wood, you may want to check out the newest addition to the "iPad case with keyboard" category from Zagg. While there are two different versions of this new Zaggmate case, one with a built-in QWERTY keyboard and one without, I imagine the one with the keyboard will be the bigger seller of the two, especially for those looking to make their iPad their travel computer.

Made from anodized aluminum and packed with military grade high-density padding, the keyboard connects with your iPad via Bluetooth, enabling horizontal or vertical use. Priced at US$99.99 with the keyboard and $69.99 without, Zagg says the cases are "Coming Soon" but you can sign up to get an email notification when they are available for sale. Check out videos of both models below.

spacebar t-shirt: these are a few of my favorite things

This simple, yet clever “Spacebar” t-shirt design by Montro has yet to be made, but truly deserves to be.

It combines four of my favorite things, computers, astronauts, passing out drunk, and hipster t-shirts all in a single package. Vote for it over at Threadless, and someday it could be hanging in your closet.

Coming soon to a pocket near you: Jorno folding Bluetooth keyboard

Want a Bluetooth keyboard that you can use with your iDevice or Mac and slip into your pocket when it's not in use? Cervantes Mobile LLC today introduced their Jorno folding Bluetooth keyboard, which folds down to a tiny 3.5" x 3.5" x .9" box when not in use. When deployed, the keyboard is quite small -- 8.5" x 3.5" by just 0.3" -- but apparently quite usable. It's only 8.8 ounces in weight, too, so it won't bog you down.

The Jorno keyboard uses a rechargeable lithium ion battery to provide about a month of use; it's charged with a Mini USB charging cable. It works with a variety of devices, so even if you don't have an Apple device, you can put one to good use. It also comes with a detachable cradle for holding a phone, iPad, or media player.

Jorno will cost US$99 when it begins to ship later this fall, but you can preorder the keyboard for a special price of $79 through October 31, 2010.

Create keyboard shortcuts to jump to Safari 4 tabs directly

My friend Steve (no, not that Steve) just solved a problem I've had for awhile now: how to jump to a specific tab in Safari using the keyboard. Turns out that it's possible, and it's free, and it works pretty well. What else could you ask for?

The solution comes from Paul Kretek's website where he outlines how to use FastScripts to assign keyboard shortcuts to specific tabs. Paul and Steve both want to use Safari, but they like Firefox's method of numbering tabs 1-9 used together with the command (⌘) key . By default, Safari uses ⌘+[1-9] to jump to bookmarks on your bookmark bar, which I use all of the time so I'm planning to make keyboard shortcuts for tabs control+1-9 instead. (⌘+0 [zero] is used to set the zoom back to original size.)

Who knows, I might change my mind. I had found myself trying to use ⌘+[1-9] for tab switching in Safari because I was already used to tab switching that way in iTerm. The only bookmark keyboard short I use with any frequency is ⌘+1 which I use to invoke Quix which I've written about previously and absolutely cannot work without.

Paul's instructions are very thorough, and although they may look a little complicated, it's something you only need to setup once. Also note that FastScripts is free for up to 10 shortcuts, after that it's US$14.95 for unlimited use.

ClamCase turns iPad into laptop

Now this is pretty awesome. ClamCase is introducing an iPad case that includes a Bluetooth keyboard so you can essentially disguise your iPad as a netbook or laptop. ClamCase can act as a generic case, an iPad stand, or you can use the keyboard for mobile computing. The one drawback, based on the video, is that you can't use the keyboard in portrait mode. No price has been announced on the accessory as of yet.

iPhone OS: Where the Delete Key Belongs

After almost four years of obsessive iPhone typing, we have grown accustomed to its keyboard. When the iPad was released, things changed.

After a week of testing the iPad it became clear that the iPad has the Delete key in the correct place and the iPhone doesn’t. In fact, the iPad’s placement feels so natural that now when I try to type text messages on the iPhone, I constantly accidentally send texts early while attempting to delete a character. The iPhone is the only device in my routine that has a confusing Delete key location. Check out the screenshots below to see what I mean.

What do you think? Has your experience been similar?

Lenovo's wireless Multimedia Remote with Keyboard sneaks out for retail

In an age of advertising hyperbole so gratuitous that every spec tweak or color change is accompanied by a press release, it's honestly refreshing to watch Lenovo tip-toe interesting new products into retail with nary a peep. Like this palm-sized Multimedia Remote with Keyboard spotted by an Engadget reader inside a Singapore mobile phone shop. Seems this wireless pup (model 57Y6336) has been on sale for about a week across the globe with a $60 MSRP or about $30 after a quick Google for discount coupons. That meager tithe takes home a 2.4GHz keyboard with trackball and USB "nano dongle" for your Windows home theater PC good for about 10-meters of wireless sofa surfing. See it in the wild after the break.

[Thanks, Bryan C.]
